Restoration story - racy red dining chairs
When our client approached us about restoring their dining chairs, they loved the shape and sentimental value of the set — but years of daily use had taken their toll. The upholstery was tired, the foam had softened and lost its support, and the timber finish had become dull and worn. Rather than replace the chairs, they chose to restore them — a decision that would completely transform both their look and longevity.
We began by carefully removing the existing upholstery, stripping everything back to the frame so we could properly assess the condition of the structure. With the chairs dismantled, we fully stripped the woodwork back to its natural, bare timber. Removing the old finish revealed the beautiful grain hidden beneath and gave us a fresh foundation to work from.
Once the timber was properly prepared and smoothed, we re-polished it to restore its richness and depth. The new finish enhanced the natural warmth of the wood while adding protection suited for everyday dining use.
Comfort was just as important as appearance, so we installed brand-new, high-quality seating foam to ensure the chairs felt supportive and inviting again. For the final touch, the client selected a racy, leather-look red vinyl for both the seat backs and bases. This bold choice introduced a modern edge while still complementing the warmth of the polished timber.
The finished result is a striking blend of classic craftsmanship and contemporary flair. What was once worn and dated is now a standout feature in the client’s dining space — proof that thoughtful restoration can breathe new life into quality furniture.
Did you know: Modern synthetic vinyls have come a long way — many now closely mimic the look, feel, and ageing qualities of real leather, but at a fraction of the cost. They’re durable, easy to maintain, and ideal for busy dining spaces.
restoration story - Restoring Character, Renewing Comfort
A client came to us with a set of damaged cane lounge chairs — elegant pieces with beautiful lines, but worn by time. The cane panels were frayed and failing, the frames had lost their lustre, and the seats had sagged from years of use. Despite their condition, the client loved their character and history and wanted them restored properly.
Cane work can be particularly challenging. Achieving the correct tension, and finish requires patience, precision, and traditional craftsmanship. We began by carefully removing the deteriorated cane and installing replacement cane panels, ensuring each section was tensioned evenly and matched to the original design.
With the structural work complete, we gently sanded the timber frames to remove surface damage and old finish buildup. The wood was then re-polished to restore its natural warmth and richness, bringing depth and life back to the grain.
The seats were completely rebuilt beneath the surface. New seating foam was shaped to provide modern comfort and proper support while maintaining the chairs’ original profile. They were then upholstered in a contemporary fabric chosen to complement the restored timber and timeless silhouette.
When the chairs were returned, the transformation was remarkable — original character preserved, craftsmanship renewed, comfort dramatically improved and upholstery with a modern edge to suit the space. The client was delighted to see their cherished pieces restored and ready for many more years of everyday enjoyment.
