Repolishing

refined finishes, enduring results
A1 Furniture can restore your piece to its original condition or transform it to better complement your existing interior. Resurfacing is often a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to replacing quality furniture — allowing you to preserve solid timber craftsmanship and sentimental pieces while achieving a refreshed look.
We resurface dining tables, boardroom tables, cabinets, buffets, entertainment units, bedroom furniture and more. Using a combination of professional spray finishing, French polishing, and traditional hand polishing techniques, every piece is treated with precision, care, and years of hands-on expertise.
In our workshop, old polish or paint is carefully removed, dents and surface imperfections are repaired and sanded smooth, and the timber is expertly restained and refinished to achieve a flawless surface. A range of sheen levels, protective coatings, stain colours, and custom paint finishes are available to suit your style and the level of use required — ensuring both beauty and durability. For more example of paint finishes check out our upcycling page.
The result is furniture that not only looks revitalised, but is protected to stand the test of time.
Contact A1 Furniture today to discuss your resurfacing and finishing requirements, and let us help you transform and protect the pieces you already love.

options to consider

the perfect finish
Every piece of furniture deserves a finish that suits its style and purpose. We offer a range of professional sheen levels, from soft matte for a natural, understated look, to satin for a smooth, elegant balance of durability and warmth, through to mirror gloss for a bold, high-shine statement. Whether restoring an antique or refinishing a high-use table, we’ll help you select the perfect finish for your space and lifestyle.
Durability
We tailor each finish to suit the level of use and desired look. From highly durable two-pack urethane for high-use tables, to smooth lacquers for everyday furniture, traditional oil and wax for a natural heritage feel, and specialist hand polishing for delicate antiques — we ensure the right protection for every piece. We also offer custom painted finishes in colours to complement your interior, whether subtle or bold.
colours
We offer a curated range of stain colours to suit your space, from natural light timber tones to warm walnut, rich mahogany, and deep espresso, with custom colour matching available. We also provide professional painted finishes in custom colours — from soft neutrals to bold statement shades — tailored to complement your interior. As results can vary depending on the base timber, all stain and paint selections are carefully discussed prior to application to ensure the perfect final finish.

Restoration story - Let the Grain Shine

This beautiful dining table came to us ready for a refresh. The client wanted it restored but wasn’t quite sure which direction to take with the stain colour. After discussing options, we prepared several samples and began the process. We carefully stripped the table back to its natural state, removing the old finish and preparing the surface properly. The timber was then lightly restained to enhance its natural warmth, before being professionally repolished and sealed for long-lasting protection. Once we sent through progress photos, the client realised just how stunning the natural timber looked beneath the old finish. Instead of going darker, they chose a lighter stain to better showcase the grain and character of the wood.
The final result? A lighter, fresher finish that highlights the beautiful grain detail while still providing durability for everyday family use.
Most importantly — one very happy client and a dining table ready for many more years of memories.

restoration story - Bringing a Family Heirloom Back to Life

Our client had recently inherited a family heirloom piano, a beautiful piece filled with history and sentimental value. While the instrument held great meaning, time had taken its toll on the exterior. The veneer was damaged in several areas, and the original finish had become dry, cracked, and heavily worn.
At the same time, the client arranged for the internal components of the piano to be professionally serviced, including re-tuning, restringing, and restoration work on some of the keys. While the internals were being brought back to life, we focused on restoring the piano’s exterior.
Working alongside a local piano moving company, we organised for the piano to be carefully removed from the client’s home and transported to our workshop.
Once in the workshop, we began by repairing the loose veneer and replacing damaged sections where necessary. The piano features a beautiful burr walnut-style veneer, so great care was taken when stripping the surface back, ensuring we removed the deteriorated finish without sanding through the delicate veneer.
After the surface was fully prepared, the piano was repolished in a semi-gloss finish, bringing out the depth and character of the walnut grain. To complete the restoration, we cleaned and refreshed all the brass hardware, including the hinges, pins, screws, and music stand.
Once finished, we arranged for the piano movers to collect the piano from our workshop and deliver it safely back to the client’s home.
The transformation was remarkable. What had been a tired and deteriorating piece was once again a beautiful, elegant instrument worthy of its family history. The clients were amazed by the result and absolutely delighted to see their treasured heirloom restored.

caring for your furniture

A well-finished lacquered or painted piece doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. A simple weekly wipe-down with a soft, damp cloth is usually enough to keep it clean and looking fresh.
To nourish and protect timber surfaces, we recommend a monthly polish using a good-quality, non-silicone-based furniture wax. Avoid silicone-based products, as they can cause build-up over time and may complicate future refinishing.
In our workshop, we use Mirotone Spray Glow, which is ideal for maintaining a beautiful, soft sheen. It’s easy to apply, enhances the depth of the finish, and helps keep your furniture looking its best for years to come. We offer a convenient furniture care kit available for purchase, so you can maintain your piece at home using the same trusted products we use in our workshop.
If you’re ever unsure about the right product for your specific piece, feel free to reach out — we’re always happy to advise.
